Gamcheon Culture Village

Gamcheon Culture Village

📍 Busan

Pastel-colored houses stacked in stair-step terraces up a hillside, connected by a maze of narrow alleys — this is Gamcheon Culture Village.

Perched on a hill in Busan's Saha District, the village took shape as refugees from the Korean War settled the slope, building homes wherever they could find room. The terraced layout — as many houses as possible packed onto limited land — survives almost unchanged today.

Starting in 2009, residents and artists teamed up on a village art project, filling the alleys with murals and sculptures and turning the aging hillside neighborhood into a photo destination. Look for the 'Little Prince and Fox' statue tucked among the stairs, or the fish mural along one of the stepped alleys — both are neighborhood favorites.

The layered pastel rooftops and steep stairways have earned the village nicknames like 'Korea's Santorini' and 'Busan's Machu Picchu,' drawing millions of visitors a year both from Korea and abroad.

Honestly, though, this is still a real neighborhood where people live — the alleys are narrow, so large tour groups can make it hard to get through, and peering into or photographing someone's yard or window is considered rude.

Pick up a stamp-tour map at the village information center and follow the marked route to hit the main photo spots without getting lost; there are a lot of stairs, so wear comfortable shoes.

Entry to the village is free. From Toseong Station (Line 1) Exit 6, transfer to a village bus and get off at Gamcheon Elementary School — it's a 5-minute walk from there.

ℹ️ Travel infoFree to enter. From Toseong Station (Line 1) Exit 6, transfer to a village bus (Saha1-1, Seogu2, or Seogu2-2) and get off at Gamcheon Elementary School, then walk 5 minutes. Stamp-tour maps are sold at the village info center (09:00-18:00; check current price on-site).
📸 Best photo spotThe "Little Prince and Fox" statue, a short walk in from Gamcheon Crossroads, is the classic photo spot. This is a real residential neighborhood — please keep noise down and avoid photographing into open doors or windows.
