National Museum of Korea

The sixth-largest museum in the world by collection size, yet its permanent galleries are entirely free — the most efficient single place to take in Korea's history and art. It moved to its current Yongsan campus in 2005, covering roughly 300,000 square meters, and the building is aligned along an axis to Namsan so that the N Seoul Tower frames perfectly in the second-floor lobby window, a famous photo spot.

Two Pensive Bodhisattvas (both National Treasures) are the symbol, carved in the 6th century in a contemplative pose that ranks among the most beloved works in Korean art history. The outdoor garden and the vast 'Square of the Court' should not be missed.

Honest tips: the scale makes seeing everything in a day unrealistic — plan your route. Even focusing on the first-floor Prehistory & Ancient gallery and the second-floor Buddhist sculpture room easily takes half a day. Wednesday and Saturday late openings run until 9 p.m., pairing art with night views, and the cafes help with fatigue. Ichon station connects directly, so transit is the easiest of any Seoul museum.
