National Gugak Center

Korea's leading national institution for preserving traditional performing arts — this is the National Gugak Center.

Its roots trace back to royal court music institutions dating to the Silla era. After liberation, it passed through the former royal court music bureau before becoming the National Gugak Center in 1951, eventually settling into its current Seocho-dong home in 1987 after several relocations.

It's not just an exhibition space — it's a living venue where gugak (traditional music), court dance, and folk music performances regularly take the stage. It also handles academic research, gugak education, and international exchange, making it the central hub of Korean traditional music.

Even without understanding Korean, music and dance can be enjoyed directly through sight and sound, so many performances are easy for foreign travelers to appreciate.
