Namdaemun Market

Set in front of Namdaemun (Sungnyemun Gate), a state-designated market of the Joseon era since 1414, this is Seoul's flagship market, running for over 600 years. Some 10,000 shops pack its maze of alleys, giving rise to the saying 'there is nothing you cannot find at Namdaemun.'

Sections divide by category — clothing, eyewear, kitchenware, ginseng, seafood, children's wear, cameras, hiking gear — and many run on wholesale hours, opening at dawn. It adjoins the National Treasure Sungnyemun, so history and shopping share one route.

Honest tips: wholesale peaks at dawn, so for sightseeing the liveliest window is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. — Sundays most shops close, so avoid it. Haggling survives alongside fixed-price stalls, especially on clothing and accessories, so comparing prices is essential. It is easy to get lost, so note the main exits. Hoehyeon station connects directly and Myeongdong is within walking distance.
