Kukkiwon (World Taekwondo Headquarters)

📍 Seoul

The headquarters of taekwondo — this is Kukkiwon, the World Taekwondo Headquarters.

Opened in 1972, its name literally combines "national sport" (國技) and "hall" (院) — it's the central institution guiding taekwondo, Korea's own martial art. As taekwondo grew from a traditional martial art into an official Olympic sport, Kukkiwon has been the body systematizing its technique and spirit and spreading it worldwide.

It's still an active, working space today, hosting rank-promotion tests and demonstrations — if you're lucky, you might catch trainees in dobok (uniforms) practicing in earnest. Next to the main building is a memorial hall, opened in 1991, displaying artifacts and exhibits on taekwondo's history.

The approach lined with flags from nearly 200 countries out front is a fitting symbol of just how global taekwondo has become.

Special demonstration schedules are irregular, so it's worth checking the website before you visit.

Admission is free. Hours are Mon-Thu 09:00-18:00, Fri 09:00-16:00, closed weekends and public holidays.
