Setagayakuritsukyodoshiryokan

Setagayakuritsukyodoshiryokan

📍 Tokyo

The place to start if you want to connect with Setagaya's history, presenting everything from prehistory and antiquity through the modern era via excavated artifacts, historical documents, folk materials, and recreated dioramas — clearly and accurately. Opened in 1964 as a project marking 30 years of ward governance, it was also Japan's first public local-history museum. Video booths and a reading corner make it genuinely useful for research, and digging into familiar local themes like the Boro-ichi market or the Tamaden streetcar is rewarding. Beyond the permanent exhibition, it frequently hosts special exhibitions, history lectures, and outdoor history classes.

📸 Best photo spotPlease avoid flash photography indoors to protect the exhibits — outdoor exhibit areas, if any, are easier to shoot.
