Opened in 1986 inside Kinuta Park, this museum's setting means greenery is visible from nearly everywhere indoors, creating a relaxed space for exhibitions of both Setagaya-connected and internationally renowned artists. Spacious galleries plus a restaurant and museum shop make it easy to spend a whole unhurried day here. The collection numbers around 16,000 works, heavily weighted toward modern and contemporary art from Japan and abroad. It was designed by Shozo Uchii, one of Japan's leading contemporary architects, whose guiding principle of 'healthy architecture' shows in how naturally the building settles into both its human and natural surroundings.
