Jokanji Temple
📍 TokyoA Jodo-sect temple founded in 1655, with its main gate and other structures built in 1742, known for holding memorial services for the courtesans of Shin-Yoshiwara. When courtesans died in the great earthquake of 1855, their bodies were buried here as though simply cast in, earning the temple its common name 'Nagekomi-dera' — the temple where bodies were thrown. A memorial tower for the Shin-Yoshiwara dead was erected here, inscribed with a verse by the poet Hanamata Kasui: 'Born into a world of suffering, in death to Jokanji.'
