Hyogojimakoen Park

This peaceful park, which also hosts fireworks displays, carries a tragic tale. In 1358 during the Nanboku-cho period, Yoshioki — second son of Nitta Yoshisada — and his party were on their way to Kamakura when men secretly allied with the Ashikaga tricked them into boarding a boat at the Yaguchi ferry crossing on the Tama River. The boat's hull had been holed, and arrows rained in from the bank. Yoshioki took his own life, and his retainers, including the renowned warrior Yura Hyogonosuke, met their own valiant ends. Hyogojima is said to be where Hyogonosuke's body washed ashore.
