Haneul Park (World Cup Park)

Haneul Park in Seoul sits atop the highest of five parks built over the former Nanjido landfill — a symbol of environmental restoration. From 1978 to 1993 the site took in Seoul's waste, and ahead of the 2002 World Cup it was transformed into parkland.

The summit is known for its eulalia (pampas grass) fields that ripple silver in autumn, and the Seoul Eulalia Festival is held each October. The sunset from the top, the Sky Bridge observatory, and the view toward Peace Park are exceptional.

Honest tips: the summit involves many stairs and slope, so it takes some fitness — a shuttle bus (paid) also runs if needed. The eulalia peaks late October to early November, weaker outside that window. Midday has almost no shade and strong sun, so sunset is the most beautiful time to visit. World Cup Stadium station is a fifteen-minute walk; weekends draw crowds, so come early.
