Kkangkkang-i Art Village

Kkangkkang-i Art Village

📍 Busan

Across from Jagalchi Market, a sock-shaped village wedged between Yeongdo Bridge and Namhang Bridge — this is Kkangkkang-i Art Village.

The name "Kkangkkang-i" comes from the "kkang-kkang" sound of hammers chipping rust and old paint off ship hulls at repair yards — the sound once rang through the entire village, and the nickname has stuck ever since.

A dozen-odd repair yards and some 200 machine shops and ship parts businesses still occupy most of the village today, making it a living industrial site where you can see the roots of Busan's growth as a maritime cultural capital.

Since 2016, murals and artworks have been layered onto this working industrial site to transform it into an art village, and weekend boat and village tour programs let you explore the shipyard alleys and waterways with guided commentary.

Honestly, though, since it's a genuinely active shipyard district rather than a polished tourist attraction, it feels more like raw industrial scenery than a picture-perfect sight, and there's no parking, so public transit is the way in.

It's a good pick for travelers who want to see Busan's authentic roots rather than postcard photos; tours run mainly on weekends (boat tour at 13:00/14:00/15:00, village tour at 14:20), so time your visit accordingly — closed Mondays.
