National Maritime Museum of Korea

A museum showing the sea's history, culture, and ecology all in one place — this is the National Maritime Museum of Korea.

Opened in 2012 in Busan's Yeongdo district, it's Korea's only national comprehensive maritime museum, holding and displaying roughly 30,000 maritime artifacts and materials across four floors plus a basement level.

Permanent exhibits span ancient navigation to modern maritime industry, alongside an aquarium of living sea creatures and a children's museum and library — a combination that resonates especially well with families.

True to a port city like Busan, the building sits right on the water, so stepping out onto the outdoor deck after your visit puts the Busan Port Bridge and passing cargo ships right in front of you — a real draw of the place.

Honestly, though, the exhibits sprawl enough that a proper visit takes over two hours, and being at the far end of Yeongdo puts it a bit further from downtown, making public transit less convenient than to other sights.

Hours are 09:00-18:00 on weekdays and 09:00-19:00 on weekends, closed Mondays, and admission is free.
