Baek In-je House

Baek In-je House

📍 Seoul

Baek In-je House, in Gahoe-dong, Bukchon, is a leading example of a modern hanok that fully preserves the architectural style of the Japanese colonial period.

On a 2,460㎡ plot with a sweeping view over Bukchon, an imposing sarangchae (men's quarters) sits at the center, flanked by a spacious anchae (women's quarters) and a large garden, with a modest annex building at the highest point. Because it retains the beauty of traditional hanok while embracing modern architectural changes, it's introduced alongside the Yun Bo-seon House as one of Bukchon's two representative buildings in terms of scale and historical value.

One especially interesting detail: it was built using black pine timber from the Amnok (Yalu) River, first introduced to Seoul at the 1907 Gyeongseong Exposition. As its name suggests, the house was once home to the surgeon Baek In-je, and it has passed through several owners over the years, carrying traces of each era with it.

It's one of the few houses in Bukchon where you can step inside and explore the hanok structure itself while wandering the neighborhood's alleys, making it a good stop to add to a Bukchon walking route.

ℹ️ Travel infoHours and closed days may vary seasonally — check before visiting. Admission fee applies. Walkable within Bukchon.
📸 Best photo spotShooting from the front yard of the sarangchae (men's quarters) toward the anchae (women's quarters) shows off the layout typical of modern hanok well. Don't miss the view over Bukchon from the highest point, where the small annex sits.
