A Nichiren-sect temple. From the mid-Edo period, this area was known as 'Higurashi-no-sato' and bustled as a recreation spot on Edo's outskirts. Shushoin, together with Myoryuji (since merged into Shushoin) and Seiunji, is also known as one of the 'flower-viewing temples.'
