A hands-on facility where visitors learn disaster-preparedness knowledge and skills by actually doing them — experiencing earthquake shaking, practicing initial fire suppression and first aid, and learning how to evacuate through smoke. It was founded on the premise that no matter how far science advances, natural disasters remain hard to predict or prevent, and the threat can arrive at any time. The programs are also used effectively in neighborhood association disaster drills and in training for students and new corporate employees. Admission is free, making it popular with families.
