Huinnyeoul Culture Village

Perched on a coastal cliff in Yeongdo, with an ocean view from nearly every alley — this is Huinnyeoul Culture Village.

Once a small fishing village, it filled in with tightly packed, stepped alleys as refugees settled the cliffside during the Korean War. The name 'Huinnyeoul,' meaning 'white rapids,' comes from the white foam created where a stream flowing down from Mt. Bongnaesan behind the village meets the sea.

In 2011, aging houses were renovated and the village was reborn as a culture and arts destination. The combination of narrow, stepped alleys and open ocean views from the cliff earned it the nickname 'Busan's Santorini,' and one of the movie The Attorney's memorable stairway scenes was filmed right in this village.

Along Huinnyeoul-gil, the path running through the village, ocean-view cafes and small galleries make it easy to pair a coastal walk with a coffee break.

Honestly, though, like Gamcheon, this is still a real neighborhood where people live — the alleys are very narrow, so crowds can make walking through difficult, and it's polite to avoid shooting photos angled directly into residents' homes.

There are a lot of stairs, so wear comfortable shoes; the ocean sunset from the village viewpoint at dusk is especially beautiful.

Entry to the village is free. From Nampo Station (Line 1), transfer to a bus and get off at the Huinnyeoul Culture Village stop (or the entrance to Jeoryeong Coastal Trail).
