Gwansuok and Site of Choryang Waegwan

Gwansuok and the site of Choryang Waegwan preserve traces of the Waegwan, the official diplomatic and trade post between Joseon Korea and Japan.

The Choryang Waegwan stood in the Choryang area of Busan for nearly 200 years starting in 1678, serving as the official channel of exchange between Joseon and Japan. The residence of the gwansu — the official who managed and supervised the Waegwan — was called Gwansuok, and this site commemorates that history together.

No original buildings remain today, so the visit is a modest one, limited to an information panel and marker stone — but the historical weight of a site that served as a real venue for nearly 200 years of Korea-Japan exchange during the late Joseon period is far from light.

Sitting right along the Choryang Ibagu-gil trail, it's a natural stop to combine with other modern heritage sites like the 168 Steps and Namsun Warehouse Site, tracing the history of Busan's port-opening era step by step.
